Today, October 14, 2022, in Astana (Kazakhstan), at a meeting of the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States, leaders of the CIS countries signed an Agreement establishing a Consultative Council of Heads of Electoral Bodies of the CIS Member States.
The initiative to create a consultative body within the framework of the CIS was put forward by the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Uzbekistan to ensure cooperation between the electoral bodies of the CIS member states. The main objective of the Consultative Council is to assist the Commonwealth member states in improving the electoral process based on their experience in holding elections and referendums following the legislation and international obligations of the CIS member states.
The Council, which consists of the heads of the central election commissions of the CIS countries, will promote the cooperation between the electoral bodies of the CIS member states, the development of recommendations for improving the electoral process in the CIS member states, the legal framework of the Commonwealth in the field of ensuring and protecting electoral rights and freedoms of citizens, organizing and holding democratic elections.
