Starting October 18, 2022, the Electoral Commission of South Africa is hosting the 5th General Assembly of the Association of World Election Bodies (А-WEB) at Cape Town (RSA). The delegation of the CEC of Uzbekistan, headed by chairman Z. Nizamkhojaev, is participating in this A-WEB event.

Established in 2013, A-WEB is the world’s largest international organization in the field of election management. Today it comprises 119 election management bodies from 109 countries.

A-WEB was founded with the vision to efficiently and effectively spread free, fair, transparent, and participative elections worldwide. The mission of the A-WEB is to identify the latest trends, challenges, and developments in democratic electoral management and electoral processes and to facilitate the appropriate exchange of experience and expertise among members to strengthen electoral democracy worldwide.

Uzbekistan has been a member of A-WEB since 2013. Thus, it is notable that Uzbekistan established fruitful cooperation ties with the Association.

On February 2, 2016, the CEC and A-WEB signed a Memorandum of Cooperation. In October 2017, the CEC became a member of the A-WEB Executive Board.

A-WEB representatives regularly take part in monitoring the presidential and parliamentary elections in our country. Also, in November 2018, the A-WEB delegation participated in the International Conference: Improving the electoral legislation and democratic elections: the experience of Uzbekistan and international practice, organized by the CEC in connection with the development of the Election Code.

In turn, the delegations of Uzbekistan systematically participate in the A-WEB General Assembly and Executive Board, in training programs of the A-WEB on capacity building in the electoral process, as well as in the A-WEB election observation missions.

On October 18, the Executive Board of the A-WEB held an Extraordinary meeting. The member of the electoral body of South Africa and the chairman of the electoral body of India addressed the audience with a welcoming speech. As a part of the agenda, Board members voted to nominate the final candidate for the next Secretary General of the A-WEB, that is, for further consideration by the General Assembly. Executive Board also considered granting Lesotho membership of the Association, appointment of the Oversight and Audit Committee Members, the agenda of the 5th General Assembly, and other issues.

According to the schedule, the meeting of the 5th General Assembly will be held on October 19, followed by the International Conference: Safeguarding Election Management Bodies in the Age of Democratic Recession on October 20.
